“Los Savages is the musical cousin to the California Locos,
having also been formed of variously notorious cats, namely
Ian Espinoza who has a long history in LA music recording
in bands like the Radioactive Cats and Mighty Hornets, Jim
Grinta who has played with everyone from Christina Aguilera
to Andrea Bocelli, Bryan Head who has toured with the likes
of Dick Dale, Foreigner and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp,
and Toby Holmes, who has basically played with everyone. We
formed when Ian suggested that he and I play the closing to
my L.A. Aboriginal show in Beverly Hills and called ourselves
Los Savages due to the use of a metal washtub with a rubber
hammer for drums and the absence of a bass player, which
gave us a very dry and crude sound that we liked. This is also a
nod to the Jook Savages which Gary Wong started in the ‘60s.
We play our brand of roots music, sticking to a blues base but
getting pretty avant-garde as well. Like the Locos, we’re an
independent collective and there’s really no stress associated

with being in the band — just creativity and experimentation.
I’m hoping we will continue to ramble into the future and get
a record done at some point.”
